Many people change their clothes every day, but few clean their bedding. People spend about one-third of their lives sleeping, and prolonged use of sheets, duvet covers, and pillows can pose health risks. Each night, the human body typically secretes around 200 milliliters of sweat; those who tend to break out in cold sweats at night may even sweat more. A humid, warm environment provides an ideal breeding ground for bacteria.

In addition, the body’s natural metabolic processes cause dandruff to shed on its own. During the dry autumn months, when the skin becomes dehydrated, the amount of dandruff tends to increase, making it even easier to flake off. Moreover, oils, saliva, dust, urine, and other residues can also accumulate on bedding items such as sheets and duvet covers. Such bedding—sheets and duvet covers—is undoubtedly the enemy of healthy skin and can easily lead to dermatological conditions like onychomycosis. Moreover, during sleep, respiratory activity releases microorganisms, bacteria, fungi, and other pathogens.
Bed linens on the bed can also enter the body through breathing, which can easily lead to respiratory infections and is detrimental to lung health. If bed linens are not washed for an extended period, they can harbor millions of microorganisms, increasing the risk of other illnesses as well.
So how often is it reasonable to clean bedding? Let’s take a look.
Bed linens and duvet covers: wash them once a week. Reports indicate that bed sheets left unwashed for 10 days can accumulate as much as 5.5 kilograms of sweat. Such linens are essentially a haven for dust mites and bacteria.
Bedding—pillowcases and pillow shams: Wash once a week. Pillowcases easily accumulate scalp flakes, dust mites, fungi, bacteria, sebum, and other dirt from hair and skin.
Pillow cores in bedding should be washed every three months. Saliva, sweat, dust, dandruff, and sebum from the scalp can easily seep into the pillow core. The longer a pillow is used, the greater the likelihood of streptococcus bacteria multiplying.
