Many people opt for pure-cotton duvet covers—so how should you choose one? And how can you tell whether a duvet cover sold by a retailer is actually made of pure cotton?
Buying Tip 1: Touch with Your Hands
If the duvet cover is washed with glue, it will feel rather stiff; when you run your hand over it, you’ll notice some resistance, and it seems to slightly absorb the moisture from your palm. This suggests a high cotton content. On the other hand, if it feels very smooth and slippery, it’s likely not pure cotton—it probably contains synthetic fibers blended in.
Buying Tip 2: Visual Inspection
When viewed under bright light, the fabric surface reveals that its fibers are fine, short, evenly distributed, and contain few long, highly curved fibers, with a high cotton content. Conversely, fabrics with a large proportion of synthetic fibers exhibit the opposite characteristics. What we commonly refer to as “lint” is actually formed when long fibers, through prolonged friction, wrap around and entangle the shorter fibers.
Buying Tip 3: Smell with Your Nose
Fabric odor: Due to differences in printing and dyeing processes, fabrics with a high synthetic-fiber content can accumulate large amounts of dye, resulting in a strong industrial smell in quilt covers made from such materials. Quilt fabrics with a high cotton content are generally more intricate and do not feature finely detailed prints, so their industrial odor is relatively mild.
Buying Tip 4: Compare Prices
For fabrics of the same area, those with a higher cotton content tend to be slightly heavier and thicker, and they also command a relatively higher price.
In addition, it is preferable to use reactive printing for bed linen sets. Compared with pigment printing, reactive printing involves the formation of covalent bonds between the reactive groups in the dye and the fiber molecules during the dyeing and printing processes, effectively integrating the dye with the fabric. This results in excellent dust-repellent properties, high cleanliness, and superior color fastness. Of course, the cost is considerably higher than that of pigment printing. In reactive printing, dyes with reactive groups are used, typically formulated as paste-like dispersions containing high-viscosity sodium alginate, which exhibit minimal degradation and low penetration, thereby better preserving the pattern. Most applications employ M-type reactive dyes with dual reactive groups; reactive printing offers numerous advantages over pigment printing, such as superior breathability, enhanced color and wash fastness, and a soft hand feel—qualities that traditional dyeing techniques, which often result in fading, simply cannot match in bed linen sets.
